Need *YOUR* opinions ~ Aspiring singer but leaning towards a different college major…?

I'm an aspiring singer but I'm leaning towards my second love -Advertising - for my college major so I can have something to fall back on in case things don't go my way. I will be moving to San Fran this August, where I'll be pursuing an AA in Advertising at the Academy of Art University. But I'm going to find singing/acting opportunities and auditions at the same time, and I'm also planning to hit LA to try my luck during the break. If something good could come up, I'll finish my course online so I can manage my job and studies at the same time. I know it's important to dream but I've been thinking it won't hurt to have something to fall back on in case things don't go my way. Besides, I can focus on both at the same time.

So.... What do you think? Is this a good enough plan? I've been taking a couple of acting classes and have been singing at my friend's parties during senior high so I did have relevant singing experiences. Your opinion will be very much appreciated.
I figured the industry is pretty much a gamble, and one can make it with or without a formal training so it's all based on luck alone, and I don't want to fall back on waiting tables if my dream doesn't work out. Actually, I already have an Associate degree in Screenwriting and have been working in 2 student films but that was in Australia. I'm planning to make a living in the States and I can't rely on green card lotteries to grant me a permanent residency so I need to enrol in a US college at least to build some network.
I'm 19 years old now, by the way.

Have you watched the new american idol? It was sooo funny...Why do you think that there are a lot of desperate kids who doesnt have any talent who wants to join this so called reality show? If you dont have any talent, why waste your time doing those auditions, and hearing those rude comments by Simon Cowell??? Do they really want to be discovered?
