Hello! So I'd like to know my chances of getting into the University of Maryland (I'd really really like to go to this school). I'm currently a high school Junior. Freshman year my GPA was a 3.4 (around there) and I took all regulars and Spanish 2 honors. At the end of freshman year, around February, I got very sick and missed school from Feb-May. I finished my classes through an online state school and maintained good grades. In Sophomore year, I continued my regulars classes and took spanish 3 honors but it was hard for me to get back into the swing of it because I had missed school for so long. My grades slipped a bit during sophomore year (but none of my core classes were below a C). In sophomore year I also took private singing classes during school and attended states competition and received an excellent. (I did not get superior however so I could not go to the actual States in tallahassee), but excellent is just under superior. I also took dance in school and participated in the yearly dance performance at the end of the year. I took a general psychology course online over the summer and received an A, which will be going on my transript but only will affect my credits and not my GPA. This year (junior year), I am taking an AP Psychology class, IB english, and IB history. I am also taking physics, algebra 2, and art. I am continuing my singing classes outside of school and will be participating in the states singing competition again this year because I have been told it looks good on college applications. I currently have A's in all my classes, including my AP and IB classes. Senior year I am planning on taking either honors or AP stats or calculus, an AP or honors science (even though I only need 3 science credits to graduate), continuing my IB english and IB history for the IB program test at the end of senior year, and taking another academic elective either in the honors level or AP level. All my community service hours(100 hours) are completed, I just need to submit them to my school. I was wondering what are my chances of getting into the University of Maryland, and what I can do to increase my chances? Thanks!

I think you got pretty good chances. However every year UMD gets a little harder to get into. It also depends on where you’re from. If you’re from MD I think you have pretty good chances considering your class list – you didn’t mention your current overall GPA but if you’re getting As it should be high. However, UMD only allows a certain percentage of out-of-state students so competition might be stiff. I’m currently a sophomore at UMD and I got in with a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale and my freshman GPA wasn’t that good, I also took many of the classes you’re taking. They mostly look at your overall GPA and specifically your Sophomore and Junior GPA, and you senior class list -you look good on all those fronts and your extracurriculars. Your SATs count too but I’ve heard talks that UMD is thinking of getting rid of SAT requirements, but its always an added plus to have high scores. Extracurricular are very important, so continue with the singing and see if there are any other things you can get involved with. Overall, I say your chances are good, really good if you’re in-state.
