I have been a writer for newspapers, magazines and poetry for many years, but want to get into writing songs. I have over a dozen songs already, but am not a musician and need someone to put the music to them. How do I find someone to do this and not rip me off?

First of all, just because you have a journalism degree or write literature doesn’t make you a songwriter. I get this all the time. The best you could be is a lyricist. If you don’t have any musical training or background and can’t write "music". Then you yourself will never be a songwriter. All you will be doing is getting a true songwriter to write the song so you can insert your lyrics. And I can say it may be hard to find a lot of people wanting to collaborate that way. Most songwriters write their own material and don’t have a lot of time to invest in someone with just a hunch. Best bet would be to learn at least some simple keys or guitar chords so at least you could piece together some kind of ideas. Because what you hear in your head is often very hard to convey to a musician. It will take forever to work that way. And if you don’t find a "Friend" who can do it. Will more than likely become pretty expensive. I have done it for friends a few times but what a beating it was. It’s no different than trying to rebuild a car motor for a Friend who bought all the cool parts but doesn’t know where they bolt on. Good luck in your search.
Try to find young talents in the ex-USSR countries, like Moldova for example. There are many young people that do it for free, just because they love it. I personally know a couple of them and the only problem they are not famous is because they leave in the poorest country in Europe, and a communist one. Thank God there is Internet.

Well, ask around to your family members. Or put an ad in the paper
look at myspace. they have several music artists pages.
